Data may be used without permission for non-profit purposes, provided that users conform to the two conditions listed under “1.Terms Use”. Please contact the NDL via our “Contact Us” to arrange for profit use.

1. Terms of Use

Please observe the following two conditions when using the data.
  1. Use of the data is limited to non-profit purposes.
  2. Please acknowledge the NDL as the source of the data if the product is for public use.

2. The Scope of the files

The scope of the files is as follows.
  1. Topical terms and some proper subjects within the scope of the National Diet Library Subject Headings (NDLSH).
  2. Subdivisions
*Personal name and corporate body name authority data outside the scope of the NDLSH are not included.

3. Files for Batch Download

Data is available in the following two formats and additions, corrections, and deletions are automatically updated daily.
For further details about RDF/XML data formats, please see “Format specifications in RDF/XML format for Geographic Names, Uniform Titles, and Topical Terms” in “About the RDF Model>Table 4. RDF/XML Format Specifications” page.

A list of tab-delimited text data includes items in Table 1. Multiple values are connected with a semicolon (;).

1 Subject heading Subject heading of authority data. Main headings and its subdivisions, or multiple subdivisions are connected with two hyphens (–).
2 Heading Transcription The katakana transcription of the heading.
3 ID Unique identifier of the authority data.
4 Variant(s) “See” reference. If it has katakana transcriptions, the katakana will be displayed in square brackets [ ] following the variant.
5 Broader Term(s) Broader Term(s) for the heading. IDs are displayed in angle brackets < > following the heading.
6 Narrower Term(s) Narrower term(s) for the heading. IDs are displayed in angle brackets < > following the heading.
7 Related Term(s) Related term(s) for the heading. IDs are displayed in angle brackets < > following the heading.
8 Cataloger’s Note Catalogers’ notes are displayed. (“See Also” reference is displayed, as are notes about whether geographic divisions are available or not.)
9 Classification Number(s) (NDLC) The National Diet Library Classification (NDLC) class number assigned to the heading as the representative classifications.
10 Classification Number(s) (NDC9) The Nippon Decimal Classification 9th Revised Edition (NDC) class number assigned to the heading as the representative classifications.
11 Classification Number(s) (NDC10) The Nippon Decimal Classification 10th Revised Edition (NDC) class number assigned to the heading as the representative classifications.
12 References  (LCSH) The Library of Congress Control Number (LCCN), assigned to the authority record for the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH).
13 References (BSH4) The Basic Subject Headings (BSH) 4th edition ID (record ID number). This is displayed only when the headings of the BSH corresponds to the value of the “Variant(s)” of Item 4.
14 Sources (BSH4) When the value of the “Subject heading” of Item 1 and the subject heading of the Basic Subject Heading (BSH) 4th edition matches, the BSH ID is displayed.
15 Sources The title of the initial source material forming the basis for the establishment of the subject heading and the reference material(s) upon which the subject heading was based.
16 History Note Information about corrections to the subject heading.
17 Date Created The date when the authority data was created. It is written in W3CDTF format.
18 Last Updated The date when the authority data was last updated. It is written in W3CDTF format.
*The item names of the output file are displayed only in Japanese.
