Search from front page<\/h3>\n<p>There are three ways to search for authority data as shown in Figure 1, i.e. <a href=\"#anchor11\">1-1. Search by Keyword<\/a>, <a href=\"#anchor12\">1-2. Search by Classification Numbers<\/a> and <a href=\"#anchor13\">1-3. Search by Identifier<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/information\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Help_fig1_20260202.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Figure 1: Web NDL Authorities Front Page (Keyword Search) Screen<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"anchor11\"><\/a>1-1. Search by Keyword<\/h4>\n<p>Click the \u201cby keyword\u201d tab shown in 1-1 to enter the search keyword in the input field and start searching.<br \/>\nUsers may select the &#8220;All\u201d, \u201cName&#8221;, or &#8220;Topical Name&#8221;, or &#8220;Genre\/Form Term&#8221; radio button beneath the input field. After selecting &#8220;Name&#8221;, users can search by Personal Name, Family Name, Corporate Body Name, Geographic Name, Uniform Title and Work. After selecting &#8220;Topical Name&#8221;, users can search by Topical Term and Subdivision. After selecting Genre\/Form Term, users can search by Genre\/Form Term.<\/p>\n<h5>1-1-1. Search Object<\/h5>\n<p>Search objects include Names\/Titles, Variant Names\/Titles as well as katakana form and romanized form of them.<br \/>\nIf you search for personal names and cannot find any results, be sure to insert a space between the family name and given name, especially for names with three or more words.<br \/>\nSearch results are affected by spaces between words. Normalization of Characters<\/h5>\n<p>Characters shown below are normalized and are considered identical in searches. Thus, a user may input either form and get the same search results.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hiragana\/Katakana, Alphabet (Upper\/Lower cases, Full-\/Half- width), Numbers (Full-\/Half- width), Basic Latin\/Extended Latin<\/li>\n<li>Upper case &#8220;\u30c4&#8221;, &#8220;\u30e4&#8221;, &#8220;\u30e6&#8221;, &#8220;\u30e8&#8221;, \u201c\u30a2\u201d, \u201c\u30a4\u201d, \u201c\u30a6\u201d, \u201c\u30a8\u201d, \u201c\u30aa\u201d, \u201c\u30ef\u201d and lower case &#8220;\u30c3&#8221;, &#8220;\u30e3&#8221;, &#8220;\u30e5&#8221;, &#8220;\u30e7&#8221;, &#8220;\u30a1&#8221;, &#8220;\u30a3&#8221;, &#8220;\u30a5&#8221;, &#8220;\u30a7&#8221;, &#8220;\u30a9&#8221;, &#8220;\u30ee&#8221; are recognized as the same letter (same for hiragana).<br \/>\nExamples:<br \/>\nSearching for \u201c\u30ae\u30ea\u30b7\u30e3\u201d also finds \u201c\u30ae\u30ea\u30b7\u30e4\u201d.<br \/>\nSearching for \u201c\u30ab\u30c3\u30c6\u201d also finds \u201c\u30ab\u30c4\u30c6\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Voiced sound mark (\u309b)\/ Semi-voiced sound mark (\u309c)\/No voiced sound mark\u30fbNo semi-voiced sound mark<br \/>\nExample:<br \/>\nSearching for &#8220;\u30d1\u30ea&#8221; finds both &#8220;\u30d1\u30ea&#8221; and &#8220;\u30d0\u30ea&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;\u30f4\u30a1&#8221;, &#8220;\u30f4\u30a3&#8221;, &#8220;\u30f4&#8221;, &#8220;\u30f4\u30a7&#8221;, &#8220;\u30f4\u30a9&#8221; \/ &#8220;\u30d0&#8221;, &#8220;\u30d3&#8221;, &#8220;\u30d6&#8221;, &#8220;\u30d9&#8221;, &#8220;\u30dc&#8221;<br \/>\nExample:<br \/>\nSearching for &#8220;\u30f4\u30a1\u30a4\u30aa\u30ea\u30f3\u201d also finds \u201c\u30d0\u30a4\u30aa\u30ea\u30f3\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Variants of Kanji<br \/>\nExample:<br \/>\nSearching for \u201c\u6e21\u8fba\u201d finds \u201c\u6e21\u9089\u201d and \u201c\u6e21\u908a\u201d as well.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The following codes are not recognized.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Half-width apostrophes (\u2018), plus signs (+), periods (.), grave accents (\uff40), or hyphens (-)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All half-width and full-width punctuations or symbols other than the above are handled as spaces. An AND search is conducted for character strings before and after a space.<\/p>\n<div>\n<pre>\r\nExample(ID: 00276855):\r\nName\/Title \u201cAT&amp;T\u30d9\u30eb\u7814\u7a76\u6240\u201d\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>You can also get the same results by searching for \u201cAT\u25b3T\u30d9\u30eb\u7814\u7a76\u6240\u201d, where the \u25b3 indicates a space. Searching for \u201cATT\u30d9\u30eb\u7814\u7a76\u6240\u201d does not find any items of interest.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<pre>\r\nExample (ID: 034358228):\r\nName\/Title \u201c\u88c5\u675f--\u4fdd\u5b58\u30fb\u4fee\u5fa9\u201d \r\n<\/pre>\n<p>You can also get the same results by searching for the word \u201c\u88c5\u675f&#8211;\u4fdd\u5b58\u30fb\u4fee\u5fa9\u201d and \u201c\u88c5\u675f&#8211;\u4fdd\u5b58\u25b3\u4fee\u5fa9\u201d, where the \u25b3 indicates a space.<br \/>\nSearching for \u201c\u88c5\u675f&#8211;\u4fdd\u5b58\u4fee\u5fa9\u201d does not find any items of interest.<\/p>\n<p>As of October 2025, the full-width middle dot \u201c\u30fb\u201d was changed from a character that is not recognized to one that is treated in the same way as a space.\n<\/p><\/div>\n<h5>1-1-3. Prefix Search<\/h5>\n<p>Adding either a half-width asterisk (*) or full-width asterisk (\uff0a) to the end of a search string conducts a prefix search.<\/p>\n<p>Example: Searching for \u201c\u65e5\u672c\u6b74\u53f2\uff0a\u201d finds the Names\/Titles that start with \u201c\u65e5\u672c\u6b74\u53f2\u201d, including \u201c\u65e5\u672c\u6b74\u53f2\u5b66\u4f1a\u201d and \u201c\u65e5\u672c&#8211;\u6b74\u53f2&#8211;1945&#8211;1952\u201d.<\/p>\n<h5>1-1-4. Restriction<\/h5>\n<p>Due to system restrictions, a keyword that contains only a single kanji in combination with other characters will often fail to find meaningful hits from the authority data.<\/p>\n<p>Examples: Searching for \u201c\u3055\u3044\u305f\u307e\u5e02\u201d does not find \u201c\u3055\u3044\u305f\u307e\u5e02\u7acb\u4e2d\u592e\u56f3\u66f8\u9928\u201d, because the search index contains &#8220;\u3055\u3044\u305f\u307e&#8221; and &#8220;\u5e02\u7acb&#8221; as separate words.<br \/>\nAlternatively, searching for \u201c\u3055\u3044\u305f\u307e\u201d or \u201c\u3055\u3044\u305f\u307e\u5e02\u7acb\u201d does find \u201c\u3055\u3044\u305f\u307e\u5e02\u7acb\u4e2d\u592e\u56f3\u66f8\u9928\u201d.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"nakanavi\" style=\"text-align: right;\"><a href=\"#header\">To the head of this page<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h4><a name=\"anchor12\"><\/a>1-2. Search by Classification Numbers<\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-48\" title=\"image_help_en_02\" src=\"\/information\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Help_fig2_20260202.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" \/><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">Figure 2: Web NDL Authorities Front Page (Classification Number Search) Screen<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Classification Number Search allows users to search for authority data for Geographic Name, Uniform Title, Work, and Topical Term by representative classification numbers from the Nippon Decimal Classification (<abbr title=\"Nippon Decimal Classification\">NDC<\/abbr>) 9th Revised Edition, NDC 10th Revised Edition or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ndl.go.jp\/en\/data\/classification_subject.html\">the National Diet Library Classification (<abbr title=\"Natinal Diet Library Classification\">NDLC<\/abbr>)<\/a>, which are assigned to the authority data. Users can choose either from a dropdown list ((a) in Figure 2) to search. In addition to searching for exact matches, users can do a prefix search by adding either a half-width asterisk (*) or full-width asterisk (\uff0a) at the end of the search string.<\/p>\n<p>Example: Searching for ME352 will find Names\/Titles with a representative classification of ME352, such as \u201c\u963f\u8cc0\u5ddd\u201d, etc.<\/p>\n<p>Example: Searching for ME* will find Names\/Titles with a representative classification that starts with ME, such as \u201c\u96e8\u201d (representative classification of ME129) or \u201c\u963f\u8cc0\u5ddd\u201d (representative classification of ME352).<\/p>\n<p>Users may select \u201cAll\u201d, \u201cName\u201d, or \u201cTopical Name\u201d, or &#8220;Genre\/Form Term&#8221; radio button in the search window ((b) in Figure 2.). Users can search Geographic Name, Uniform Title and Work by selecting the \u201cName\u201d button, and can search Topical Term by selecting the \u201cTopical Name\u201d button. However, the Classification Number is not added to Genre\/Form Term, so users cannot search Genre\/Form Term by representative classification numbers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nakanavi\" style=\"text-align: right;\"><a href=\"#header\">To the head of this page<\/a><\/p>\n<h4><a name=\"anchor13\"><\/a>1-3. Search by Identifier<\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2955\" title=\"image_help_en_03\" src=\"\/information\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Help_fig3_20260202.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" \/><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">Figure 3: Part of the Web NDL Authorities Front Page (Identifier Search) Screen<\/div>\n<p>\nWith Identifier Search, you can search authority data not only by National Diet Library (NDL)\u2019s authority IDs, but also by identifiers from external databases that are displayed as related links on <a href=\"\/information\/help_en\/#anchor22\">Detailed Information Screen<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nEnter an identifier in the search box, then select the corresponding identifier type or issuing organization from the drop-down list on the right before starting the search.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe system will retrieve authority data that contains the selected identifier value. Please note that if the identifier type or issuing organization of the entered identifier does not match the value selected in the drop-down list, the search will not return any results.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nSearches are performed using exact matching; however, spaces entered in the search term are ignored. In this Map, the Current Term (i.e., the Term whose Detailed Information is being displayed) is at the center, with connections to other Terms represented as follows: Broader Terms are connected with solid arrows, Narrower Terms with dashed arrows, and Related Terms with dotted arrows. If Broader or Narrower Terms themselves have additional Broader or Narrower Terms, those are connected and displayed as well; however, when it comes to Related Terms, only terms related to the Current Term are displayed.<\/p>\n<p>At the top left of the Thesaurus Map display, the number of displayed Terms and depth is indicated as &#8220;Total xxx nodes (depth n).&#8221; If more than 100 terms are included, only the depth up to the 100th Term are shown, and the top left will display a message such as &#8220;Total xxx nodes (depth n), of which displaying yyy (depth m) (Show all).&#8221; Clicking the &#8220;Show all&#8221; link will display all Broader and Narrower Terms, although this may take some time.<\/p>\n<p>C licking on a term within the Map will navigate to the Detailed Information page for that term.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h4>2-2(c). There are four types of link buttons shown in the following table. If there is no bibliographic data linked to the authority, the search results will be 0.
