What is Authority Data?<\/h3>\n<p>NDL maintains bibliographic data, such as title or author, to facilitate users\u2019access to relevant resources. Preferred Names\/Titles of persons, corporate bodies and works, and subject headings or other extra information are recorded in the bibliographic data to distinguish different people with the same name or to identify people who use pseudonyms, nonstandard spellings, transliterated names, or other variants.<br \/>\n\u201dAuthority data\u201d is organized to indicate alternative Names\/Titles, synonyms, and other extra information with the index of the preferred Name\/Title.<\/p>\n<table class=\"datatable\" border=\"1\" summary=\"This table shows that variant name spellings for one author are assembled into a single name. The Scope of Provision and Standards for Creation of Authority Data<\/h3>\n<p>All of the authority data the NDL currently maintains is available on the Web NDL Authorities. Specifically, \u201cPersonal Name\u201d, \u201cFamily Name\u201d, \u201cCorporate Body Name\u201d, \u201cGeographic Name\u201d, \u201cUniform Title\u201d, \u201cWork\u201d, \u201cTopical Term\u201d, \u201cGenre\/Form Term\u201d and \u201cSubdivision\u201d used under the subject headings are available. Subject authorities also include \u201cSubjects Headings with Subdivisions\u201d in its scope of provision.<\/p>\n<p>Authority data is divided roughly into \u201cAuthority File for Authors\u201d, \u201cAuthority File for Works\u201d, \u201cSubject Authority File\u201d and \u201cAuthority File for Genre\/Form Terms\u201d. The same Authority File is used for Authors and Subjects for personal names, corporate body names, and geographical names corresponding to countries and administrative units.
